Our Story

Some furniture is bought. A few pieces are commissioned — made once, for one home, by the hands that will answer for them for the years to come.

WD Custom Woodcraft began as an atelier, and with a conviction that ran against the received wisdom of the Singapore home: that solid wood does not merely endure the tropics but, understood properly, belongs here — and will thrive here, for generations. It is a quiet argument against a familiar fear. Most of us have seen a beautiful timber table warp or split after a season of air-conditioning, and quietly concluded that solid wood is too fragile to keep. We set out to prove the opposite.

We are craftsmen first, and last. Between us we carry a long apprenticeship in the material — a third-generation craftsman who first stood at a workbench as a boy, and an artisan drawn to the most figured and exotic timber, and to the hand-cut joinery that lets it speak. What we share is a refusal to treat wood as a commodity to be cut, glued, and sold. Wood is a biological medium; long after it leaves the tree it never stops breathing, forever settling with the air around it — and an heirloom has to be built in agreement with that fact, not against it.

That conviction met an obstacle early. Timber worthy of a piece meant to outlive its owner was hard to come by in Singapore, and no amount of ordinary drying settles a material that spends its life reaching for equilibrium with the air. So we built what the craft demanded: the discipline to prepare our own material — the Stabilisation Protocol — and, to secure it, a home for good timber and the community that works it. That is how Wood Depot came to be: not the beginning of the story, but something the atelier needed.

This is the proper order of our method: Scientific Mitigation in the service of Artisanal Resolution. We stabilise timber to a moisture content matched to the Singapore climate, then engineer every joint to breathe — floating panels, mortise and tenon, dovetails that hold fast while the wood moves freely beneath them. The result is not furniture that tolerates its environment, but furniture entirely at home in it.

When you commission from us, you commission from the craftsmen directly — no showroom between you and the workbench, no committee between your vision and the grain. Each piece is drawn, crafted, and finished in our atelier, and for every major commission the stability of your furniture is not a promise we ask you to take on faith, but a measurement we record and hand to you with the completed work.

This is what we offer, and all we offer — an heirloom, made once, for you, built to be handed on.

Every commission begins with a conversation — about your home, the way you live in it, and the piece you have in mind.
